Mansfield & Ashfield 2020 together we mean business
Winner, finalists and sponsors of the 2014 Short Story Competition
New to the competition is the opportunity for all finalists to attend Nottingham University for a Creative Writing workshop hosted by lead lecture and short story judge and supporter Thomas Legendre. The young people went along on the 10th February and had a fabulous experience.
This annual short story has grown year on year through the partnership formed between Mansfield Area Partnership and Mansfield 2020. Together both parties work towards bridging the gap between young people and employers. The short story competition is just one of many activities they deliver to provide employability skills to young people.
In recent reports the government have been urging schools to encourage creative writing. This competition demonstrates that yet again Mansfield is ahead of the game and engaged with what businesses want from young people as they enter the workplace.
The initial idea was driven forward by business leader Kath Jephson of B Jephson (Mansfield) Ltd and board member of Mansfield 2020: ‘I love books and I am passionate about giving every young people an opportunity it’s great to see more and more young people using this opportunity and getting involved’.
The sustainability of the competition is only made possible through the loyal support of local businesses Stopford Associates, B Jephsons (Mansfield) Ltd and The Evolve Trust. As key sponsors of the event the competition is able to provide a generous prize of £500 to each winner for their school to spend on creative writing resources. All runner up’s also receive a certificate and goody bag.
All stories are printed in what will be Volume 3 ‘WrittenByMe’ book by local print company Linney Group. The books are then available to order and made available at an official book launch event held later in the year at Mansfield Library.
The winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony held on 2nd April at the Mansfield Library from 6pm onwards. The awards evening is open for all to attend from students, families to local businesses.
